Intended to commemorate the 35 lives lost as a result of the Westgate Bridge collapse in October 1970, the Memorial Park design will ensure that this important part of Melbourne's history is acknowledged and communicated appropriately.

Spectacular lighting of the precinct and of the ill fated bridge span will ensure that the community will be continually reminded of the sacrifice involved in the completion of one of Melbournes most important bridges.

Environmental restoration forms one basis of the memorial, and interpretation another. A key element of the design is the memorial sacred zone which lies directly below the bridge span and is framed by an elevated walkway.
