Coomes Consulting Group was appointed by the Department of Sustainability and Environment to review the Alpine Resorts Planning Scheme and provide recommendations to streamline and improve the approval process.

This included consultation with those who participate in the Alpine Resorts planning approval system.

The Alpine Resort areas of Victoria are significant to the State, providing a unique opportunity for the development of permanent tourism facilities above the snow line in the Alps. Planning control is exercised through a single planning scheme for the five resorts - Falls Creek, Lake Mountain, Baw Baw, Mount Hotham, Mount Buller & Stirling, each presenting a unique situation with a set of different circumstances.

The Alpine Resort areas have a sensitive environment and natural

  • resource base significant pressures for resort and
  • recreational development, and climatic conditions which specify
  • relatively short windows of opportunity for construction activity.

Alongside the Planning Authority, each resort has a Management Board which participates in the decision making and planning processes. The Boards are charged with the responsibility of managing the resorts, pursuant to the Alpine Resorts (Management) Act 1997.
