Indigo Shire Council was selected as the pilot council to undertake a Biodiversity Planning Project within the North East Region.

The project was initiated in response to the ability of local planning schemes to protect and enhance biodiversity values within local environments.

The purpose of the study was to establish clear strategic direction on how best to effectively implement suitable biodiversity planning controls into the current Indigo Planning Scheme to protect defined priority biodiversity areas that are within the urban growth areas of Chiltern, Beechworth and Yackandandah.

Stage 1 of the project identified the main biodiversity assets within the Shire and also the priority biodiversity areas. Three priority biodiversity areas have been identified because of their conservation value and significant threat from development and/or land zone change.
