The Surbiton Park Sewage Treatment Plant is managed by Western Water and located 40km west of Melbourne between the growth areas of Werribee to the southeast and Melton to the north in Victoria.
The treatment plant processes 3200ML of sewage per annum and produces Class C recycled water. 100% of the recycled water produced at the plant is currently consumed by agricultural businesses in the region. After a tertiary treatment upgrade to the plant, the nearby Eynesbury Station development intends to service 2900 homes with Class A recycled water from the plant over the next 15 years.
To continue to supply the regions agricultural industry and meet future agricultural and residential demand for recycled water, Western Water requires additional sewage supply for treatment at the Surbiton Plant.
Existing sewerage infrastructure transporting sewage from the Caroline Springs region in Melbourne's west to the Western Treatment Plant (WTP) is approaching capacity with augmentation of the branch sewer network planned for 2010. Currently the demand for recycled water from the WTP is significantly less than supply, with the excess disposed into Port Phillip Bay. If the 5GL of sewage per annum could be diverted from the Caroline Springs region to the Surbiton Treatment Plant, additional recycled water could be supplied to meet demand in the Melton area, offsetting the need for augmentation of the existing branch sewer network and reducing the amount of effluent discharged into Port Phillip Bay.
