This project, one of the largest plant rescue projects undertaken in Victoria, included 3.1 hectares of bare / weed infested areas requiring plant rescue, and implementation of a land management scheme integrating a habitat link with private properties.

The scope of works included

  • selective thinning of existing vegetation to meet CFA requirements
  • transportation of topsoil from the donor site containing indigenous seed stock and installation in the habitat link area
  • transplanting of plants rescued from the donor site
  • removal of weeds
  • propagation of trees (which could not be transplanted easily) from seed collected from the donor site
  • collection of branches from the donor site containing seed capsules and spreading over the habitat link
  • rabbit / fox control
  • installation of post and wire fences to allow passage of wildlife along the habitat link
  • a three year maintenance period including on-going consultation with allotment owners to ensure the use of allotments is compatible with the regeneration of indigenous vegetation and the movement of wildlife through the habitat link.
